ClimaCab Humidity Control

Humidity control is one of the most critical aspects of a robust instrument care regimen, with both high and low humidity potentially causing irreparable damage to stringed instruments. The Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System was designed after hours of research and development, resulting in a world class system that provides two-way, automatic humidity control with little maintenance.

Precise, durable, and high quality components combine to deliver an exceptional humidity controlled environment for your collection. In addition to the Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System, the patented Boveda Two Way Humidity Control Packets serve as a back up humidification source allowing you the peace of mind in the event of gaps in filling of the reservoir, extended power outages or time away from home, and as calibration tool by absorbing or emitting moisture as needed.

When these two humidity control approaches are used with our proprietary hermetically sealed interior, the systems work flawlessly to provide or remove humidity to the desired level of 45-55% that preserves stringed instruments for generations to come.

Redundancy With Boveda

In addition to the Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System, the patented Boveda Two Way Humidity Control Packets serve as a back up humidification source allowing you the peace of mind in the event of gaps in filling of the reservoir, extended power outages or time away from home, and as calibration tool by absorbing or emitting moisture as needed. In certain situations, the Boveda can properly humidify smaller ClimaCabs given that the ambient relative humidity in the space it will utilized in is within certain ranges.

Humidity Control Packets

PATENTED TECHNOLOGY

  • Boveda’s patented 2-way humidity control continually responds to ambient conditions by adding or removing moisture

MULTIPLE PACKET TYPES

  • 49%, 49% High Absorption (HA), and 72% Seasoning

Aromatic Cedar Packet Holders

The Boveda aromatic cedar packet holders are designed to hold two packets each and we provide five packet holders per ClimaCab. Each features precision cut slots to allow the moisture inside the packet to be released into the interior of the upper section. In addition, the cedar adds a subtle pleasing aroma.

STORAGE CAPACITY

  • Each packet holders stores two packets

STORAGE LOCATION

  • For Micro/Petite ClimaCabs, the packet holders can be used anywhere within the ClimaCab; however, we recommend along the back wall at the floor

  • For ClimaCabs Petite+ and larger, the packet holders are mounted discretely to the backside of the left door frame.

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Dimensions (L x W x D): 5.5" x 4" x 1"

OPTIONS

Based on requests from our customers and finding solutions for certain lower section configurations, we have developed the following options for using the Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System or omitting it and using only the Boveda Two-Way Humidity Control Packets as the only humidification source.

Ducted Humidity Control

Required for any ClimaCabs with drawers, and most configurations utilizing pull out trays and/or shelves.

QUALITY COMPONENTS

  • HVAC grade flanges, flex hose, clamps, and accessories

ACCURATE

  • Accurately sized and trimmed to result in no air loss

CUSTOM MILLED VENT PLATE

  • Precisely cut circular vented plate results in sufficient airflow into upper section

No Powered Humidity Control

Control the humidity in the ClimaCab using Boveda only. Please note: this is only recommended for climates with near perfect humidity year round

OPTIONS

  • No vent plate or hole in the floor of the upper section with Boveda Cedar Packet Holders on back side of door. Available for Petite+ and larger size ClimaCabs only

  • Vent plate and shallow box to house the Boveda Cedar Packet Holders. Available for all sizes.

Dehumidification Module

In order to use the Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System as a dehumidifier, additional items are required to be purchased. Active dehumidification may be required during seasonal variations in ambient humidity or in regions where high humidity persists year round.

The module consists of a separate reservoir, lid and high airflow fan, and 2 pounds of color changing desiccant beads. After connecting the module, a quick change of settings on the smart controller is required. Ongoing maintenance of the dehumidification system requires minimal time to keep it operating ideally.

Humidity Information

High Humidity Effects on Instruments

A guitar can become over-humidified when it has been exposed to humidity that is very high (80-90%) for several weeks, or for several months where the humidity is medium-high (60-70%).

Guitars that are over-humidified can sound lifeless and dull because of the extra water weight the wood is holding.

High action, poor sound, warping, and neck angle changes are the common symptoms of over-humidification.

We have options to prevent over-humidification, whether it's the 49% HA two-way humidity control packets or the dehumidification module for our Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System.

Low Humidity Effects on Instruments

Low humidity is enemy number one for stringed instruments. Some regions, such as the Rocky Mountains and desert southwest, are dry year round while others experience seasonal fluctuations due to weather patterns and heating of buildings.

In most cases with prolonged periods of low humidity below the recommended 45-55%, the guitar has a risk of cracking. In addition, necks can bow, the fingerboard can shrink in width, causing the sharp ends of the frets to extend beyond the edge of the neck, and bridges can lift.

Low humidity issues are prevented by using the proprietary Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System and choosing the setpoint you are comfortable with.

The Perfect Humidity Range for Instruments

45-55% is considered the ideal humidity range for stringed instruments. Many luthiers humidify their shops to approximately 47-50%. When guitars are built, the tolerance to measurements can be as tight as 1/100th of an inch. As instruments ship to other regions of the world, they acclimate to the humidity and literally change size.

Keeping guitars within this 10% window of humidity is best and will ensure that the guitar stays within the tolerances recommended by the luthier when building the instrument.

In our humidors, the task of keeping the instrument within this range requires very little effort with our automated humidity control systems.

Humidity 101 - Learn the Basics and More

There are many great resources online regarding the differences between absolute and relative humidity. We are more concerned with the latter for instrument care.

At any given temperature, the air can hold a certain amount of water. At 68 degrees F, it can hold a maximum of about 18 grams of water. At 77 degrees F, this jumps up to about 22 grams of water. If the air is holding 22 grams of water at 77 degrees F, then the relative humidity is 100%. If it holds 11 grams of water, the RH is 50%.

Since cooler air holds less water, as we heat this air the relative humidity drops. This occurs around the country each winter resulting in low RH.

Customer Testimonials

"With the ClimaCab, the constant filling of reservoirs to keep the room at the proper humidity level is a thing of the past. After the first fill of the Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System, I had 4 months of humidity control before refilling again!

Patrick M.  - Vail, Colorado

"The entire system is well thought out - first seal the cabinet, then provide a simple to use humidity control mechanism, and lastly the back up source. Kudos to the team at AR for their thoughtful and elegant approach to humidity control"

Arthur L.  - Bend, Oregon

"Living in the desert southwest is one of the worst locations for guitar owners. So glad I have a consistent 45-50% relative humidity, plus my guitars are nearby and I've been playing them more....and when I do, they sound better as well."

Scott F.  -  Albuquerque, New Mexico
