HUMIDITY CONTROL

Humidification

What is the Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System?

Our proprietary system consists of a stainless steel reservoir, a smart controller, a Swiss made humidity and temperature probe, a high airflow fan, and a 24 gauge stainless steel lid. More information on this system can be found here: Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System

What type of water is required for the Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System humidifier?

For the powered humidifiers, distilled water should be used to prevent lime and scale build up in the reservoir. In addition, we recommend including a few drops of bacteriostat into the reservoir each time you refill. We offer this for sale here.

What other routine maintenance do I need to perform on the Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System humidifier?

Routine maintenance includes changing of the wick every 6-8 months, cleaning the reservoir and lid, and adding a few drops of bacteriostat when refilling the reservoir. Replacement wicks for all sizes of ClimaCabs can be found here: ClimaCab Wicks.

What is the average refill time for the water reservoir?

Typically every 10-12 weeks you'll be adding water to the reservoir. Sometimes it can be less or more time between refills, depending on several factors such as how often the ClimaCab is opened, the internal humidity levels in the room where the ClimaCab resides (and therefore the air exchanged into the ClimaCab when opening), and the starting moisture content of the instruments.

Is there ever situations where passive evaporation will drive the humidity level too high?

Because of the hermetically sealed interior, there are certain situations where the passive evaporation may drive the interior humidity levels slightly higher than the recommended set point of 50%. To prevent this from happening, we've created a lightweight, impermeable mat which floats on top of the water surface and reduces exposed surface area of the water. On average, this will reduce the interior relative humidity by 4-7%. We ship a mat with each ClimaCab and it's very easily to implement if required.

What if the humidity is still high after implementing the passive humidity mat?

Please reference Dehumidification section below.

What is the water vapor content in the ClimaCab?

Since relative humidity is a relationship between the temperature of the air and the water vapor present, we have chosen 70 degrees F as a common temperature for most internal spaces and 50% humidity as the target RH. Air at 68 - 70 degrees F and 50% RH can hold approximately 9 ounces of water per cubic yard. The amount listed below does not include the amount of water inside of each properly humidified guitar, which for the average acoustic is about 7 ounces.

Dehumidification

In what situations is dehumidification required?

Depending on your regional climate and several other factors, dehumidification may be required. In general, the safe range for instruments is 45-55% relative humidity. If internal levels persist above 55%, the dehumidification module may be required.

How is dehumidification accomplished in the ClimaCab?

The Dehumidification Module consists of an identical stainless steel reservoir as the Humidificaction Module reservoir, but contains a different lid with two fans (one blowing into the reservoir and over the desiccant beads and the other blowing out into the upper section) and 1 lb of color changing desiccant beads. It also requires some different setpoints in the smart controller, which will be identified in reference material shipped with the module.

Is the Dehumidification Module included or an add-on feature?

The Dehumidification Module is available for purchase for $425. Purchase the Dehumidification Module by clicking the button below.

Owner's Information

Where are the necessary owner's documents located?

Owner's manuals for the Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System and the ClimaCab, as well as several care and use documents can be found by going to our Document Downloads page.

Hermetically Sealed

What does hermetically sealed mean?

A hermetic seal is any type of sealing that makes a given object airtight.

How does Acoustic Remedy ensure a hermetic seal?

It all starts with the neoprene gasket running the entire perimeter of the instrument storage area. Next, we employ a method to pull the door tight to the gasket and create a micro-climate. On the smaller ClimaCabs with one door, we use extremely durable spring loaded latches, which is the same we have used on our single instrument humidors since inception in 2008. On the larger ClimaCabs, the method is accomplished using a series of strong neodymium magnets.

To ensure airtightness, we light test every single humidor leaving our shop. If no light can escape, no air can either. If we discover any slivers of light, due to wood shrinking, we have proprietary methods to shift the gasket wood strip in/out from the interior which raises or lowers the gasket.

Is Acoustic Remedy the only company using this method?

Yes, we are the only humidor manufacturer to do this.

Calibrating Multi-Instrument Humidor Hygrometers

How is the hygrometer/temperature probe calibrated?

The probe can be calibrated by using the instructions in the Acoustic Humidity Control System Owner's Manual. This is available from our Document Downloads page, where more detailed instructions are located and available to download.

What is included in the extended warranty?

The extended warranty covers the same components for an additional five years.

DISPLAY & STORAGE OPTIONS

What is the best display and storage option for my instrument collection?

This question is somewhat difficult to answer; however, we can provide some guidance and examples of situations where one display and storage option may be better than the next. The major division within our ClimaCab display and storage options is either a hanging or resting system. We get asked often if one is better than the other and our opinion is that each has its advantages. The common misconception is that hanging guitars is bad for them; however, that has been debunked many times over. We have addressed this topic in more detail in the General section.

Therefore, the storage of the instruments is safe with both the hanging and resting options. We would recommend the Neck & Bouth Rest option for earthquake prone regions because the hanging options could result in instruments swinging into one another during a seismic event.

As for display of the instruments, both the hanging and the resting options have a lot of versatility. The hanging options use yokes which pivot 180 degrees and the resting options mostly use the guitars in a sideways orientation; however, angled and front facing options exist due to our innovative components.. Both the resting and hanging systems have the ability to add and remove components, slide them horizontally, and utilize in several configurations.

Many decisions ultimately come down to personal preference and we have built nearly equal amounts of ClimaCab with the hanging options as the resting options. To learn more about the various differences between each, please visit ClimaCab Display Options.

LEAD TIMES

What are current lead times?

The current lead times for built-to-order ClimaCabs is approximately 7 - 9 months for standard sizes, features, and most options.  For Climacabs with more customized aspects, we estimate those to take approximately 2 - 3 months additional. These lead times are based on current orders, high demand, and our small batch, handmade build process.

SHIPPING

How is the ClimaCab shipped?

We ship all ClimaCabs in a 3/4" plywood crate with foam on the inside. We also purposely built the base wider to circumvent the tipping of the crate; however, in the event of an incident, we include external tip and shock indicators for vital information in the event we need to make claims for damages. Next, we employ Apple AirTags and/or GPS trackers on or inside the crates and provide a return shipping box with a prepaid label. It's rare to have large crates go missing, but we have experienced them being misplaced for extended periods in shipping terminals. The information provided by the tracking devices has proved its worth on several occasions.

In terms of our carrier network, we use only national freight carriers through a reputable freight broker. There will be tracking information via an online system for you to check on progress as it moves from our shop to your house.

Are there various levels of shipping service?

Yes. The following levels of service are available:

  • Non-Liftgate:  The recipient is required to remove from the delivery truck. This is not recommended under most circumstances; however, some customers opt to have the ClimaCab shipped to a commercial location with a loading dock or have access to a forklift at their homes, which are typically rural hobby farms where this equipment may be accessible. For all non-lift gate services the delivery truck is equipped with hand-operated pallet jacks which will be used to position the ClimaCab at the rear of the cargo area if a fork truck is to be used to remove. For commercial locations, the hand-operated pallet jacks can be used to remove and position the crated ClimaCab on the receiving dock.

  • Threshold: The delivery driver will lower the ClimaCab to the ground using the liftgate requested during the booking of the service and move the ClimaCab to the first covered area, such as the porch or garage.

What about Room of Choice and White Glove services?

In late 2023, Acoustic Remedy faced significant issues with their room of choice and white glove shipping services. The freight company was often unequipped to perform these services, and the problems encountered far outweighed the additional money paid by the customer. As a result, Acoustic Remedy incurred many expenses in attempting to fix these issues, leaving everyone involved frustrated.

Therefore, we have decided to eliminate these options and instead recommend that customers apply the additional money they would have spent on these services with the freight company to hire professional movers to assist them with getting into the house, should they find this necessary for their situation. This situation is desirable for everyone involved (both the customer and Acoustic Remedy) because the safety factor dramatically increases by hiring insured, bonded, and professional movers to finish the last, but extremely critical, steps of getting the ClimaCab safely into your residence. This makes for a stress-free and quality experience. The last thing we want is to get a phone call stating that the freight company sent inexperienced and inadequate employees who have no business moving an expensive and pristine piece of furniture.

In our experience, when incidents occurred with Room of Choice and White Glove shipments it was extremely difficult to claim and recoup expenses even though shipments were fully insured. In the event a professional moving company causes damage to the ClimaCab or your residence, the claim process is much easier because the moving companies do not have multiple layers of lawyers, union representatives, and poor customer service representatives in between us and the payments to Acoustic Remedy for damages.

Who is responsible for hiring professional movers?

The customer is fully responsible for hiring the moving company to assist with moving the ClimaCab into the residence. In rare circumstances, Acoustic Remedy will assist with this process; however, additional charges will be applied to the final invoice for this service.

Is shipping included in the price of the ClimaCab?

No. We quote shipping for each ClimaCab via a network of freight providers. Pricing is based on (but not limited to): the level of service, size of ClimaCab, and location of delivery.

Is the crate included in the price of the ClimaCab?

No. The high-quality 3/4" plywood crate is an additional cost above and beyond the cost of the freight service. Our build team creates every crate for each ClimaCab shipment utilizing OSB plywood and internal foam to ensure safe delivery of your ClimaCab. This vital step is the first and last line of defense for the protection of the ClimaCab that took many months to build. It cannot be overstated how important the crate is and this cost is non-negotiable. In other words, we will not entertain options to ship our ClimaCabs in any other manner. With that said, we do not upcharge the cost of the crate. What we charge you is what we pay. In fact, we do not upcharge any portion of the shipping.

Do we provide shipping estimates?

Yes, we can provide shipping estimates. We will need the details of the ClimaCab, the level of service required, and a shipping address. Quotes are valid for seven business days unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Can I lock in the shipping and crate price before the ClimaCab shipment date?

No. We cannot lock in shipping costs more than seven days from when the quote is provided due to freight services, the price of plywood, foam, and other packaging materials, and other handling costs fluctuating frequently.

Is the shipping trackable?

Yes, we will send online tracking information once available. This information is provided within 1 business day of the ClimaCab leaving our shop.

Are the ClimaCabs ever damaged during shipping?

Despite all of our efforts to properly protect the ClimaCab and select reputable haulers, unfortunately, we have experienced limited damage during shipping. However, it has only occurred in less than 1% of our shipments. We also have criteria that our haulers must meet and regularly update regarding their damage rates and risk reduction initiatives.

What happens if damage occurs?

In the very rare event that one of our ClimaCabs has any damage in transit, we never leave the customer with a damaged product. More often than not, the glass will break in transit and we have never had anything majorly wrong with the wood, joinery, etc. (knock on the proverbial wood). One way we have prevented major catastrophe is to utilize our UV Blocking/Safety Glass. This is a laminated glass with an inner layer that blocks the UV but also binds the glass together. This means that if it does break, it remains in tact instead of breaking into pieces. This protects the wood of the ClimaCab and prevents most major damage to the interior. If this happens, it is a very simple repair that can be completed by a local glass company. Acoustic Remedy will ship the proper size and type of glass.

In the event more serious damage occurs, we will work on those situations individually as the situation warrants. In all circumstances, we will file damage claims with the carrier.

Is international, Alaska, and Hawaii shipment available?

Yes, we ship internationally, as well as to Alaska and Hawaii. Each situation is unique and we will with our vast carrier network to provide a quality shipping experience.

ORDERING

How do I secure a build slot?

Purchasing a build slot is simple. We sell the slots for $2,500 per ClimaCab. This is a non-refundable deposit on your ClimaCab that secures your spot in the next batch of ClimaCabs.

ADJUSTING STRING SWING YOKE WIDTH

Are the String Swing hangers adjustable width?

Yes, all String Swing hangers are adjustable in the description of situations where widening or shrinking the opening between the yoke ends is described in more detail below.

What situation would require widening the yoke?

For guitars with wider headstocks, such as classical guitars, the standard opening may not be wide enough and therefore you would need to widen it manually to allow for a comfortable fit.

What situation would require shrinking the yoke?

For guitars with thinner headstocks, such as several Santa Cruz and Collings models, the slimmer headstock width requires shrinking of the yoke to prevent the tuners from resting on the hanger. Sometimes guitars with normal size headstocks require shrinking the yoke slightly to pull the guitar upward and prevent the strap pin from resting on the bottom of the case. A good example of this is a Gibson SJ200, which can fit in a standard rectangle case only if the yoke is shrunk slightly.

How do I widen the String Swing yoke?

To widen the yoke, we recommend unthreading the hanger and using two hands to gently pry the two ends of the yoke apart

How do I shrink the String Swing yoke?

For shrinking the yoke, it is not necessary to unthread the String Swing and typically only requires a good firm squeeze with one hand to accomplish the task. If you're uncertain of being able to accomplish this with one hand, then unthreading and using two hands is recommended.

HUMIDITY CONTROL

Humidification

What type of humidity control is used in the single instrument humidors?

We utilize the Boveda Two Way Humidity Control packets. These packets are stored inside the humidor in Aromatic Cedar packet holders. The packet holders hold a pair of packets each and feature a slotted top to allow the moisture to release through the permeable membrane on the packet and into the humidor. This nearly maintenance free system, combined with our patented gasket/latch system, provides the simplest humidity control mechanism available on the market.

The reason the Boveda is considered two-way is because they will either absorb or release moisture as needed to reach the target RH level on the packet. This means they can work in variety of climates to combat either low or high ambient humidity levels.

How long do the packets last?

Typically the packets will last around 2-3 months in the winter months and 4-6 months over the summer. This is dependent on many factors including the starting RH of the instrument, how many times the air is exchanged, and diligence latching the door shut after removing or replacing your instrument.

When do the Boveda packets need to be replaced?

The 49% RH Boveda are specifically designed to maintain wooden instruments, which should be kept between 45-55% relative humidity. Anytime the hygrometer in the humidor reads below 45% or the packets feel very stiff to the touch, it's time to replace them. Simply toss out the old packets and replace with new.

What types of packets does Boveda make?

  • 49%
  • 49% High Absorption (HA)
  • 72% Seasoning Packet

What is the difference between Boveda and D'Addario Planet Waves packets?

NONE! Boveda has always been the manufacturer of all humidity control packets on the market, regardless of what name they were sold under or who was the primary distributer. Boveda was previously called Humidipak, which was marketed and sold by D'Addario under their Planet Waves product line. After some time, the name was changed to D'Addario's 2-Way Humidification System. Following a licensing agreement expiration, Boveda went to market with their own line of humidity control packets to complement their full line of cigar and herbal medicine packets.

Where can replacement packets be purchased?

We sell packets in various quantities on our website. To purchase, please click the appropriate link below.

We also have a Packet Renewal Program, which will auto-ship packets to your house on a quarterly basis.

What is the water vapor content in the ClimaCase and/or ClimaStand?

Since relative humidity is a relationship between the temperature of the air and the water vapor present, we have chosen 70 degrees F as a common temperature for most internal spaces and 50% humidity as the target RH. Air at 68 - 70 degrees F and 50% RH can hold approximately 9 ounces of water per cubic yard.

Dehumidification

In what situations is dehumidification required?

Depending on your regional climate and several other factors, dehumidification may be required. In general, the safe range for instruments is 45-55% relative humidity. If internal levels persist above 55%, dehumidification is required.

Will the Boveda packets work to drive down excess humidity?

Since the packets are designed to be two-way humidity control, they have the ability to both release and absorb moisture. A few percentage points with the standard 49% packets is achievable. If more humidity reduction is required, we recommend the 49% High Absorption (HA) packets.

Calibrating Single Instrument Humidor Hygrometers

How is the hygrometer calibrated?

We highly recommend using the Boveda One-Step Calibration Kit over other testing methods. In no case, do we recommend using the salt test. . This test is not accurate and can damage and void the warranty on your Caliber IV. You can purchase the Boveda One-Step Calibration Kit by clicking the link at the bottom of this FAQ topic.

Instructions for the Boveda Hygrometer Calibration Kit

  1. Place your hygrometer inside the bag and completely re-close the zipper.

  2. Allow the Calibration Kit to sit for a minimum of 24 hours at room temperature, 65 to 75°F

  3. The hygrometer should read the RH% level stated on the Calibration Kit (75%). Any variance will require a calibration, described in the next steps.

Calibrating the Humidity Display

  1. Test the humidity display settings by placing the unit next to another unit that is known to be accurate or by using the Boveda One-Step Calibration Kit for at least 24 hours without disturbing the environment*.

  2. Determine the amount of calibration needed by taking the display value and subtracting the expected value**. For example, if you are expecting 75% but your unit displays 71%, the amount of calibration needed is 75-70 = +5%.

  3. Press the Set button for 3 seconds to place the unit into calibration mode.

  4. In calibration mode, you will see the current adjustment setting flashing on the display. If this is the first time you are calibrating your unit, it will show 0%. If you have already calibrated the unit previously, you will see the current adjustment.

  5. Press the Min/Max/Clear button to adjust the display based on your calibration. Pressing the button once will change the adjustment by 1%. The adjustment range is +/-6% in the following sequence: 0, +1, +2, +3, +4, +5, +6, -6, -5, -4, -3, - 2, -1, 0.

  6. When you have completed your adjustment, press the Set button one more time and it will take the unit out of calibration mode. If you leave the unit in calibration mode for more than one minute without pressing any buttons, the unit will automatically will change back to operations mode.

** The Caliber IV can be adjusted +/- 6%. If you find the unit is more than 6% out of calibration, please call us so that we can troubleshoot with you or have you send it back for a factory calibration.

Restoring Factory Calibration

To restore Your Caliber IV back to factory calibration, simply follow the calibration instructions above and adjust the display back to 0%. This will restore the unit back to factory calibration.

If the length is extended and a rectangle humidor is desired, we recommend bumping up to the Jumbo rectangle.

When is a Super Jumbo single instrument humidor required?

We recommend the Super Jumbo for bass guitars and long scale archtops.

SHIPPING

How are the ClimaStands protected for shipping?

All ClimaStands ship in two boxes. The first box is much larger and contains custom made foam packaging which floats the humidor portion in the interior of the box. We then include 2" thick rigid insulation on the bottom, top, and sides to protect all exposed wood and glass surfaces from crushing, puncture, or impact damage. The second box is smaller and contains the base unit, which ships folded down with the proper packaging.

On occasion, we will ship orders with multiple ClimaStands or with extremely rare wood types on a pallet. These shipments are somewhat rare; however, when it is required we will utilize our expansive freight network and find quality freight carriers to deliver the pallet.

Do the two boxes always arrive at the same time?

99+% of the time the two boxes will arrive at the same time. On occasion, we've witnessed both the humidor and/or the base arriving before the other. When this happens, please check the automated tracking information that was emailed to you upon creation of the shipping labels.

Does Acoustic Remedy call the shipping company and solve problems?

Unfortunately, we have very little influence when packages are delayed. If the product is damaged or completely lost, we will be involved in every part of the claim process as well as getting a replacement item shipped as soon as possible, free of charge.

What indicates the order is fulfilled?

Upon creating of the shipping label, our order system will generate an automatic email. This only indicates we have created the shipping label, which needs to be done approximately 1-4 days before the item ships. The reason is because there is no electricity at the Amish shop, so all labels are created at AR headquarters and brought to the shop. Sometimes the items ship the very next day and others it takes a few more days before it's ready. Keep an eye on the tracking and if it has been more than 4 days since the automated emailing stating your order is shipping, please contact us for more details.

What tracking is available?

Why are there no updates to tracking?

For all single instrument humidors, the most likely reason is that the order has not been picked up by FedEx yet. Please see previous question regarding order fulfillment and how we print labels ahead of the ship date.

For all multi-instrument humidors, the tracking system has less frequent updates than common carriers. It is likely that the freight is in between hubs and the system will update within 24-48 hours.

ASSEMBLY

What is the recommended installation for a ClimaCases?

All rectangle ClimaCases have a pair of mounting holes, spaced 16" apart, at the top and bottom. In addition, below the lowest String Swing hanger position there is an additional mounting hole. This set up gives you the most versatilitiy in how to secure at least one screw into a wood stud. The triangle ClimaCases have three mounting holes total. A pair at the bottom spaced 16" apart and another below the lowest String Swing hanger position.

We provide all the hardware required and each ClimaCase ships with a card insert which has a QR code linking to our Document Downloads page, where more detailed instructions are located and available to download.

CONVERSION TO CLIMACASE

What is required to switch from a ClimaStand to a ClimaCase?

Removal of the bolt-on base and mounting to the wall are the only steps required. All ClimaStands have the proper mounting holes drilled in the back and finished with a matching wood plug. Simply remove the wood plugs and follow the recommended installation instructions for the ClimaCase triangle.

HUMIDITY

Relative vs. Absolute Humidity

What is the difference between absolute and relative humidity?

Absolute humidity is the total mass of water vapor present in a given volume or mass of air. It does not take temperature into consideration.

Relative humidity (RH) is a measure of how much water vapor is in the air. From a technical standpoint, relative humidity is defined as the ratio of the actual vapor pressure of water vapor to the saturation vapor pressure of water; in other words, how much how much water vapor is in the air and how much water vapor the air could potentially contain at a given temperature. It varies with the temperature of the air: colder air can hold less vapor. So changing the temperature of air can change the relative humidity, even when the absolute humidity remains constant.

Dehumidification

Will the Boveda packets work to drive down excess humidity?

Since the packets are designed to be two-way humidity control, they have the ability to both release and absorb moisture. A few percentage points with the standard 49% packets is achievable; however, if more humidity reduction is required, we recommend the 49% High Absorption (HA) packets for the single instrument humidors and the Dehumidification Module for the multi-instrument humidors.

In what situations is dehumidification required?

We recommend keeping the relative humidity between 45-55%. If you are experiencing levels above the upper end of this range, we would recommend implementing some dehumidification process. Most of the time this will occur in regions of the world with already elevated ambient humidity levels, such as the southeast United States or Asia Pacific. The top five wettest states, with the average relative humidity are: 1.) Alaska - 77.1%, 2.) Florida - 74.5%, 3.) Louisiana - 74%, 4.) Mississippi - 73.6%, and 5.) Hawaii - 73.3%. More information about the average relative humidity in your region is provided in the next tab.

Measuring the internal relative humidity levels inside your home or building is important because each time the humidor is opened, you are introducing air into it and therefore effecting internal levels. We highly recommend monitoring these levels to understand when dehumidification may be necessary. Our line of Bluetooth monitoring devices are a simple and easy way to do so. In addition, a large number format hygrometer, such as a ThermPro, will assist with seeing the humidity levels from across the room.

Average Relative Humidity Levels Worldwide

What is the average relative humidity around the world?

Instrument Humidity Needs

Do my instruments need humidification or de-humidification?

Most regions worldwide require one or the other while some are lucky to have ideal humidity levels year round, such as Santa Cruz, CA, home of Santa Cruz Guitar Co. We typically break this down to two factors - geographical and seasonal.

For example, in Wisconsin, where Acoustic Remedy is headquartered, the humidity can fluctuate significantly from low teens in the winter to low 90s in the summer. Any location similar to this actually needs both humidification and de-humidification. Rocky Mountain and desert regions tend to be very dry year round, while locations such as Florida or the sub-tropics are very moist year round.

Acoustic Remedy utilizes three systems to either humidify or de-humidify our humidors. The first system is the world's simplest and is produced by Boveda. The 2-Way Humidifcation packets either absorb or emit moisture to keep the interior levels between 40-50% RH. The second system is the Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System, which is capable of both humidification and dehumidification. All ClimaStands & ClimaCases use the Boveda packets only, while our ClimaCabs utilize the Acoustic Remedy Humidity Control System as the primary source and Boveda as a secondary/redundant source.

What if I have whole home humidification, do I still need a humidor?

Whole home humidification is definitely better than none; however, there are many implications of relying on this for instruments. First of all, in the winter months you may have to turn up the humidity so high that condensation, molding, and other unwanted side effects start appearing. By utilizing our products, you've isolated the instruments and have a much smaller space to condition.

About Boveda

How often do I need to replace the Boveda packets?

Typically the packets will last around 2-3 months in the winter months and 4-6 over the summer. This is dependent on many factors including the starting RH of the instrument, how many times the air is exchanged, and diligence latching the door shut after removing or replacing your instrument.

How long does it take for RH levels to reach equilibrium?

If your guitar has not been previously humidified and/or is showing signs of lack of humidity, the packets will dispense at an increased rate due to the fact that the instrument is in a dry condition and will soak up the moisture it desperately needs to reach equilibrium.

Research has shown that a properly humidified acoustic guitar holds about 8-10 grams of water. To restore a dry guitar to the proper level can take 30-60 grams of water/vapor. The wood and interior of the humidor may also need to be “seasoned”. This can be accomplished by purchasing some of the Boveda 72% packets, which can also may be used to fast track your instrument's humidity levels as well. Once everything has reached equilibrium, within 1-2 days, the humidors do an incredible job of keeping all internal spaces and the instrument at the recommended 40-50% relative humidity (RH).

How are the Boveda packets used?

The Boveda packets are stored in Boveda Packet Holders, which come in one or two packet versions in either Cedar or brushed aluminum. You simply remove the packets from the packaging, place them into the packet holders and place in the lower corners of the ClimaStand/ClimaCase with the slotted side up. Each ClimaStand/ClimaCase ships with a pair of two packet holders and optional magnetic/velcro mounting plates with 3M adhesive backing. We highly recommend putting them in the lower corners, however with the mounting plates you can place them anywhere you want within, such as the sides. Please be cautious in doing so because the adhesive can let go. Acoustic Remedy is not responsble for packet holders falling and damaging instruments. By using in this fashion, you are doing so at your own risk.

Once the packets are in the humidor, they go to work either absorbing or releasing moisture with no effort from you. Automatic humidity control at it's finest!

Why do I feel small lumps in the Boveda packets?

Boveda formulas are a saturated salt solution which means an excess amount of blended salts are mixed with water and dispensed into the pouches you receive. From time to time some crystals form during the blending and filling process. This is normal and inherent of salts physical structure, but also unavoidable. Although crystals will form, they do not impact the performance of Boveda and are completely safe to use. If the crystals have become too sharp, and in the rare instance puncture the pouch, please notify Boveda and they will replace them at no cost.

As the lumps get larger, the packets are losing moisture. Eventually they feel like chunky peanut butter and are within a few days of being completely spent. Once the packets are stiff, replace them with a fresh set.

Does the RH taper off near the end of Boveda packet life?

The 49% RH Boveda are designed specifically to maintain wooden instruments. This makes them a little different than other Boveda product formulas which are accurate to +/- 1% RH (or lower).

For wooden instruments, which should be kept between 45-55% relative humidity, to maximize the lifespan of the Boveda, the 49% packs start at the top of the range – high 50’s – and as they release their moisture end at the bottom of the range – low to mid 40’s.

EFFECTS OF IMPROPER INSTRUMENT STORAGE

What kind of instruments are affected by improper climate control?

Although all instruments are affected by improper climate conditions, both temperature and humidity, acoustic instruments tend to be prone to the most significant damage. Electric solid body instruments are also affected, so it's important to properly humidify them as well.

What are the symptoms of a dry instrument?

  • Warped top (bowed or cupped)
  • Neck bow
  • Change in tone of instrument
  • Sharp fret ends
  • String action too low/notes buzzing
  • Cracking of the neck and/or body
  • Lifted bridge
  • Finish checks, cracks, or “orange peeling”

What are the symptoms of a wet instrument?

  • High action. Strings that are unusually high off the fretboard, making it difficult to play
  • Unusually swollen top
  • Unusual warp on the top, back or both at the end-block.
  • Improper neck angle. Sighting the neck to the bridge, the frets will appear to hit below the bridge
